About Oriah Festival

Oriah is the principal annual festival of the Wancho community of Longding district in southern Arunachal Pradesh. It is observed in February and revolves around purification, ancestor offerings and the renewal of friendship pacts between Wancho villages.

Each village celebrates Oriah on its own chosen date in February, coordinated by the village chief (Wangham or Wangsa). The ceremonies are centred on the morung — the traditional youth dormitory — and on the chief's house, where mithun and pigs are sacrificed and the meat shared across clans and visiting friendship villages.

02

Festival highlights at a glance

  • Mithun and pig sacrifices led by the village chief (Wangham/Wangsa)
  • Wancho warriors in beaded headgear, tusks and ceremonial daos
  • Folk songs and Sahwang/Pakam dances around the morung
  • Exchange of rice-beer and meat parcels between friendly villages

03

Why visit Oriah Festival?

  • One of the least-visited tribal festivals in Northeast India
  • Rare access to Wancho chiefdom culture in Longding, near the Myanmar border
  • Pairs naturally with a visit to Wancho villages around Niausa and Pongchau

04

Festival history

Oriah is part of an older agricultural ritual cycle of the Wancho, marking the close of one farming year and the preparation for the next. The festival predates Christianity in the region; in villages that still maintain the traditional faith it remains an explicitly religious occasion, while in mixed villages elements are observed as cultural heritage.

05

Dates and venue

  • Annual dates: typically a six-day window in February, with the exact dates set village-by-village by the chief.
  • Main venues: Wancho villages of Longding district — including Niausa, Pongchau, Kanubari, Wakka and Longding town.
  • FLAGGED FOR REVIEW: cross-check current-year dates with the Arunachal Pradesh Department of Indigenous Affairs and the District Administration, Longding, before publication.

06

Tribe and community

The Wancho are a Naga community of southern Arunachal Pradesh, related historically and linguistically to the Konyak Naga of Nagaland's Mon district across the state border. Wancho villages are organised under hereditary chiefs and are known for their bead work, brass head pendants, log drums and elaborate facial tattoos seen on the eldest generation.

07

Cultural significance

Oriah is both a thanksgiving and a renewal: thanksgiving for the past year's harvest, and renewal of inter-village friendship pacts through the formal exchange of meat parcels, rice-beer and gifts. Sacrifices by the chief mark the community's continued relationship with ancestors and tutelary spirits.

13

Photography tips

  • Always ask the chief and individual subjects before photographing rituals or elders with traditional tattoos.
  • A 35 mm or 50 mm prime is well-suited to morung interiors and tight village lanes.
  • Carry spare batteries — winter cold drains charges and there is little reliable power in remote villages.

14

Nearby attractions

  • Niausa and Pongchau Wancho villages, known for bead and brass work.
  • Khonsa (Tirap district) — administrative town with Nocte villages around.
  • Patkai range viewpoints near the Myanmar border.

16

Responsible festival etiquette

Oriah Festival is a living cultural event hosted by the Wancho community. Please attend as a respectful guest, not a spectator.

  • Always ask permission before photographing elders, priests or performers.
  • Dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees, especially around ceremonial spaces.
  • Follow instructions from community elders and event organisers.
  • Do not touch ritual objects, altars or sacred poles.
  • Carry your waste back; avoid single-use plastics at venues.
  • Buy directly from local artisans and homestays to support the host community.
