Village visits are arranged in advance with the council or a host family, groups stay small, and the daily distances are set by the roads as they are, not as a brochure would like them to be. Where no fixed departure exists for the state or community you have in mind, we will design a private cultural journey around your dates instead of selling you something adjacent.

Village stays and community hosts

Where a community-run homestay exists — Khonoma, Tuophema, Longwa, Ziro's Apatani villages, Mising households on Majuli — we use it. Rooms are simple, meals are cooked in the house, and payment goes to the family and the village fund rather than to an outside operator.

Crafts, weaving and artisan visits

Loin-loom weaving in Naga and Mising villages, bamboo and cane work in Arunachal, mask-making and wheel-less pottery on Majuli, Garo and Khasi craft traditions in Meghalaya. Visits are scheduled so artisans are paid for their time.

Photography and documentation journeys

Slower routes with early starts, longer stays in a single village and honest guidance on what may and may not be photographed. We do not stage ceremonies or arrange people in costume for a shoot.

For international travellers

Airport transfers from Guwahati or Dibrugarh, English-speaking guides, help with domestic flights and trains, and permit assistance for guests booking a complete package tour with us. We do not run a standalone permit service.

  • Ask before photographing anyone; a refusal is final.
  • Village visits are agreed with the council or host family in advance and compensated.
  • Public festivals are open to visitors; private rites and sacred spaces are not.
  • Buy directly from weavers, potters and cane workers.
  • Keep group sizes small so a village hosts guests rather than a crowd.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in a tribal tour of Northeast India?
Our tribal tour packages in Northeast India normally cover private transport with a driver, an accompanying guide, accommodation in hotels and community homestays, permits for foreign nationals travelling on the tour, village and artisan visits arranged in advance, and festival access where the itinerary is timed to one. Flights and travel insurance are not included.
Are these private tours or group departures?
Both. Most journeys run as private, tailor-made trips for one party. Small-group departures are timed to major festivals such as Hornbill, Aoleang and Wangala, and stay small so that villages host a handful of people rather than a coachload.
Do foreign nationals need permits for a tribal tour?
Arunachal Pradesh requires a Protected Area Permit, and since the December 2024 order Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram are again under the Protected Area Regime for foreign nationals. Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura do not require one. Permit assistance is provided only to travellers who have booked a complete package tour with Living Roots Expeditions — we do not offer a permit-only service.
How many days should a tribal tour itinerary be?
Ten to fourteen days is the practical minimum for one state and a festival. Three weeks lets you combine Nagaland, eastern Arunachal Pradesh and Assam; our 31-day flagship expedition links the region's major festivals in one continuous route.
What is the best time for tribal tours in Northeast India?
October to April. February brings Sekrenyi, March Myoko, April Aoleang and Mopin, May Moatsu, September Solung, November Chalo Loku and Wangala, and the first week of December Hornbill.
Can we stay in tribal villages?
Yes, in villages where a community-run or family-run homestay exists — several in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh do. Rooms are simple and shared bathrooms are common; the value is the evening in the kitchen, not the plumbing.
Is photography allowed on tribal tours?
In public spaces and at festival grounds, generally yes, after asking. Ritual ceremonies, morungs during rites and private homes are often not photographable, and your guide will tell you the position in each village.
