Festivals of Assam
Festivals of Assam — Bihu, Raas, Ambubachi & the Brahmaputra
Assam's festivals trace the rhythm of the Brahmaputra: planting, harvest, monsoon and the slow river journeys that tie the valley together. The three Bihu festivals — Rongali in April, Kongali in October and Bhogali in January — are the cultural backbone of the state. Around them sit the great Vaishnavite gatherings of Majuli, the Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya, the Tibet-influenced Tawang Torgya in the hills, and a series of tribal festivals among the Bodo, Mising, Karbi, Tiwa, Rabha, Dimasa and Tea Tribe communities.
Assam is the easiest Northeast Indian state for first-time festival travellers — well-connected, well-equipped with hotels and home-stays, and yet still rich in living tradition.

The three Bihus
Rongali Bihu (Bohag Bihu) in mid-April is the new-year and spring festival. Seven days of dance, song and gift-giving — Husori troupes move from house to house, Mukoli Bihu is performed in open village grounds, and the bihu dancers' brass jewellery and red-and-white mekhela chador define the visual identity of Assam.
Bhogali Bihu (Magh Bihu) in mid-January is the harvest festival. Tall meji and bhelaghar bonfires are built from bamboo and thatch the night before, then lit at dawn in a thanksgiving for the just-completed crop. Communal feasts of pithas, laru, fish and meat follow.
Kongali Bihu (Kati Bihu) in mid-October is the austere bihu — observed at twilight by lighting akakhi banti lamps in the fields and at the base of tulsi plants to invoke a protective harvest. The least public of the three but the most spiritually intimate.
Majuli's Raas Mahotsav
The Raas Mahotsav on Majuli island, the world's largest river island, is the most striking Vaishnavite festival in the Northeast. For three nights in November (around the full moon of Kartik), the satras (monasteries) of Auniati, Garamur and others perform bhaona — sacred theatre — that re-enacts the life of Krishna.
Sattriya dance, recognised as one of India's classical forms, was created and is still preserved by Majuli's monks. Watching it in its original setting — a candle-lit naamghar surrounded by tropical river-island silence — is one of the most powerful experiences in Indian travel.
Ambubachi Mela and Kamakhya
Each June, the Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati closes for four days during Ambubachi — the festival that marks the goddess's annual menstrual cycle. On the fourth day the temple reopens and thousands of tantric sadhus, devotees and travellers join the celebration.
Ambubachi is intense, crowded, deeply atmospheric and not for every traveller. If you go, plan with a local guide who can navigate the queue systems and identify the sadhu camps that welcome respectful conversation.
Tribal festivals across Assam
Beyond the mainstream calendar, Assam's tribal communities maintain their own festivals. Baishagu (Bodo, April) is a sister festival to Bihu with the kham-jotha drum at its heart. Ali Aye Ligang (Mising, February) marks the start of sowing along the Brahmaputra islands. Karbi Youth Festival in Diphu showcases the Karbi hill culture with chamang-kan dance. Wanchuwa is the Tiwa harvest festival. The Tea Tribe communities of Upper Assam celebrate Karam Puja and Tusu Puja in autumn.
When to visit Assam for festivals
Mid-April for Rongali Bihu is the cultural peak. Mid-November for Majuli Raas is the most visually rewarding. Mid-January for Bhogali Bihu is the most food-led and family-warm. June for Ambubachi is for the tantric tradition.
Wildlife travellers should target November to March when Kaziranga and Manas are at their best — neatly overlapping with the Raas Mahotsav on Majuli for an integrated itinerary.
Getting around the Brahmaputra valley
Guwahati (GAU) is the main air gateway, with flights from every Indian metro. Dibrugarh (DIB) and Jorhat (JRH) are practical for Upper Assam, Kaziranga, Majuli and the Sivasagar Ahom heritage circuit. Inner Line Permits are not required for Assam.
Within the valley, road and rail are reliable. Ferry crossings — Nimati Ghat to Majuli, Dhubri to South Salmara — are part of the experience but check schedules locally, especially in the monsoon.
Responsible festival travel in Assam
Assam's tourism economy is more developed than in neighbouring hill states, which makes choice matter more. Pick home-stays and tea-bungalow estates that pay village staff fairly. Buy mekhela chador, Pat and Muga silk directly from the weavers of Sualkuchi and the Mising and Bodo riverine villages. Carry minimal plastic onto Majuli — the satras are working to keep the island waste-free.

Frequently asked questions
- When is Rongali Bihu 2026?
- Rongali Bihu (Bohag Bihu) begins on 14 April 2026 with Goru Bihu and continues for seven days. The peak public dance days are 15–17 April; village festivities can extend through the month.
- When is the Majuli Raas Mahotsav 2026?
- Raas Mahotsav 2026 is observed around the Kartik Purnima full moon in November. Public bhaona performances at Auniati, Garamur and Kamalabari satras run for three to five evenings.
- Do I need a permit to visit Assam?
- No. Neither Indian nor foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for Assam. Standard hotel registration applies, and Kaziranga / Manas entry tickets are bought at the park gates.
- Is Kamakhya safe to visit during Ambubachi?
- Yes, with planning. Ambubachi is one of India's largest tantric gatherings — crowds are significant, queues are long, and a local guide is strongly recommended for first visits.
- What is the best festival itinerary in Assam?
- A 7–10 day November loop covering Guwahati (Kamakhya), Kaziranga National Park, the Brahmaputra ferry to Majuli for Raas Mahotsav, and the Ahom monuments of Sivasagar offers the most varied festival experience.
- How do I reach Majuli island?
- Drive to Nimati Ghat near Jorhat, then take a 90-minute public ferry to Kamalabari. Vehicle ferries run daily until early evening. The new Majuli Bridge from Jorhat is partially operational.
- What food should I try at Assam festivals?
- Pithas (rice cakes), laru (sesame and coconut sweets), masor tenga (tangy fish curry), khar (alkaline curry), duck with bottle gourd, and fresh bamboo-shoot curries. Bhogali Bihu stalls serve these all night.
- Can I combine Bihu with wildlife travel?
- Yes. Mid-January Bhogali Bihu pairs perfectly with Kaziranga and Manas safaris — both parks are at peak visibility and Bihu villages are within easy reach.
