The Wancho village beside Longding town — the easiest first stop for travellers entering the Wancho hills.
Overview
Longding village sits at the district headquarters of Longding, created in 2012 when the district was separated from Tirap. It is the most accessible Wancho settlement and functions as the administrative and market centre for the surrounding villages.[1],[2]
Because government offices, the market and lodging are concentrated here, most itineraries into the Wancho belt — Wakka, Pumao, Niausa, Kaimoi — begin and end in Longding.[1],[3]
History
The Wancho area was administered as part of Tirap Frontier Tract and later Tirap district; Longding was upgraded to a full district in 2012 with Longding as headquarters.[1],[2]
Culture & cultural significance
Wancho clan structure, the chief's authority and morung-based youth organisation remain visible even in the headquarters village, alongside churches that now anchor much of community life.[2],[3]
Longding's weekly market is the best place in the district to see Wancho beadwork, cane helmets and carved bamboo mugs being traded rather than made for tourists.[1],[3]
