Overview

Wakka is a large Wancho village in Longding district of eastern Arunachal Pradesh and the headquarters of Wakka circle, sitting on a ridge in the hill country between Longding town and the Nagaland border.[1],[2]

Like most Wancho settlements it is governed around the institution of the Wangham (hereditary chief) and its clan morungs (paa), and remains one of the best places in the district to see Wancho social organisation, bamboo architecture and festival life still functioning day to day.[2],[3]

History

The Wancho hills fell within the old Tirap administrative area until Longding district was carved out of Tirap in 2012, when Wakka became one of the circles of the new district.[1],[4]

Wancho villages were historically autonomous chiefdoms; headhunting was practised until the mid-20th century and ended after Indian administration and Christian missions reached the hills, though wood carvings and heirloom ornaments from that era survive in chiefs' houses.[2],[3]

Culture & cultural significance

Wancho society is stratified around the chief's clan, and the Wangham's house is the largest structure in the village — usually decorated with carved posts, mithun skulls and log drums.[2],[3]

Older Wancho men and women carry facial and body tattoos and wear cane helmets, hornbill-feather headgear, boar-tusk necklaces and beadwork during Oriah; the Wancho script, devised in the 2000s and encoded in Unicode in 2019, originated in this belt.[2],[5]

Traditional architecture

Houses are raised bamboo-and-thatch structures on hillside terraces, with front verandahs used for drying grain and a communal morung serving as the dormitory and meeting hall for each clan.[2],[3]
