About Mopin Festival

Mopin is the most important festival of the Galo community of west-central Arunachal Pradesh, celebrated to invoke prosperity, ward off evil spirits and mark the beginning of the agricultural year.

It is held principally in West Siang, East Siang and Lepa Rada districts, with the largest community celebrations at Aalo (Along), the headquarters of West Siang. The festival's most recognisable images are Galo women in pure white dress performing the Popir dance.

02

Festival highlights at a glance

  • Smearing of etting (rice-paste) on visitors as a blessing
  • Popir dance performed by Galo women in white attire
  • Mithun sacrifice by the village priest (Nyibo)
  • Apong (rice beer) shared from bamboo mugs

03

Why visit Mopin Festival?

  • The all-white attire makes Mopin one of the most photogenic Northeast festivals
  • Genuine village-scale celebration with very few outside visitors
  • Combine with a trip to Aalo and the Siyom river valley

04

Festival history

Mopin is an ancient Galo agricultural festival, tied to the belief in Mopin Ane, the goddess of wealth and well-being. It is conducted under the guidance of the Nyibo (priest) and historically lasted several days; in its modern public form it is celebrated over five days, with the main day fixed at 5 April.

05

Dates and venue

  • Annual dates: 1–5 April, with the main day on 5 April.
  • Main venue: Aalo (Along), West Siang district; village-level celebrations across West Siang, East Siang, Lepa Rada and Lower Siang.

06

Tribe and community

The Galo are part of the wider Tani group of communities, which also includes the Adi, Nyishi and Apatani. They speak Galo, a Tani language, and traditionally practise jhum (shifting) cultivation alongside settled paddy.

Galo women at Mopin wear the all-white gale wraparound skirt with a galuk blouse; men wear traditional cane helmets and dao swords. The all-white visual identity is the defining hallmark of the festival.

07

Cultural significance

Mopin seeks the blessings of Mopin Ane for a good harvest and the well-being of the community. The smearing of etting (rice paste) on visitors is a ritual blessing — a sign that the recipient is welcome and protected.
