Overview

Khonsa is the headquarters of Tirap district and the largest settlement in the Nocte area, spread across ridges at around 1,200 m in the Patkai foothills.[1],[2]

For travellers it is the practical base: the district administration, the main market, most lodging and the road links to Borduria, Namsang, Deomali and on to Longding all run through Khonsa.[1],[3]

History

Khonsa became the administrative centre of the Tirap Frontier Tract in the mid-20th century and remained headquarters when Tirap became a district; Changlang was separated in 1987 and Longding in 2012.[1],[2]

Nocte clan and chief structures continue alongside a modern district-town population, and the Khonsa market brings villagers from across Tirap on market days.[1],[3]
