History

The Galo settled the Siyom and Hie river valleys over generations of clan migration; Basar and its satellite villages became the administrative centre of the belt, and Leparada was carved out as a district in 2018.^[1],[4]

Galo society is clan-based, with Donyi-Polo practice alongside Christianity, and village decisions taken in council. Wet rice and jhum cultivation both continue in the bowl.^[2],[4]

Mopin, on 5 April, is the principal Galo festival — rice flour is smeared on faces as a blessing and the Popir dance is performed by women.^[4],[5]

Traditional architecture
