Kharchi Puja

Kharchi Puja is Tripura's seven-day state festival, held every July at Puran Habeli in Old Agartala, dedicated to the Chaturdasha Devata — the fourteen deities of the erstwhile Tripura royal house. It is one of the largest religious fairs in the state and draws pilgrims from across Northeast India.

The festival opens with the ritual bathing of the fourteen deities in the nearby Saidra river, performed by the hereditary chantai (royal priest) and his assistants, and closes with a large mela of cultural performances, food stalls and crafts.

Kharchi Puja has been observed at Old Agartala since at least the reign of Maharaja Krishna Manikya in the 18th century, when the Tripura royal capital was moved from Rangamati to Puran Habeli. The Chaturdasha Devata temple was established as the royal shrine and the puja was formalised as a state observance.

'Kharchi' derives from the Kokborok word 'khar' (sin) — the puja is understood to cleanse the earth of accumulated sins from the year past. The Tripura royal family, though no longer ruling, continues to sponsor key rituals of the puja.

Kharchi Puja is celebrated by both the Tripuri indigenous community and the wider Bengali Hindu population of Tripura, reflecting the syncretic character of the state's religious life. The chantai priests belong to hereditary Tripuri families rather than to Brahmin lineages.

The fourteen deities include Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik, Ganesh, Brahma, Prithvi (Earth), Samudra (Ocean), Ganga, Agni (Fire), Kamdev and Himadri — an inclusive pantheon reflecting Tripura's blend of tribal and Hindu traditions.

Kharchi is a purification festival: the bathing of the deities symbolises the cleansing of the earth-mother, who is understood to menstruate through the preceding Ambubachi period. Devotees offer prayers for good harvests, freedom from disease and prosperity for the household.

The festival is a public reaffirmation of Tripura's unique Tripuri–Bengali religious syncretism, and one of the few occasions where both communities gather at the same shrine in comparable numbers.

No Inner Line Permit or Protected Area Permit is required for Tripura. Indian and foreign nationals can travel freely with valid ID.

Security is tightened during the mela; carry a government-issued photo ID and be prepared for baggage checks near the temple.

July in Agartala is the peak of the monsoon with heavy rainfall, warm temperatures of 26–32 °C and high humidity. Carry a waterproof jacket, quick-dry clothes, waterproof footwear and a rain cover for camera gear.

Agartala has the widest range of stays — hotels near the Ujjayanta Palace and airport are convenient. Basic government-run guesthouses at Old Agartala are the closest to the temple but book out early.

Reserve two to three weeks in advance; Kharchi is the busiest week in Agartala's calendar.

• The dawn bathing procession from temple to river is the strongest visual — arrive an hour before sunrise for position.
• Photography inside the sanctum is restricted; the courtyards and river ghats are permitted with discretion.
• The mela stage runs from late afternoon into the night; a fast prime and a willingness to push ISO help in low light.
