Garia Dance
Garia is the spring jhum-cultivation dance of the Tripuri people, performed for seven days from the last day of Chaitra in honour of Garia, the god of livestock and good harvest. Men and women dance shoulder-to-shoulder in open circles around a bamboo shrine, accompanied by the kham, sumui flute and dangdoo.

Overview
Garia is the principal folk dance of the Tripuri people, the largest indigenous community of Tripura.
It is danced during the seven-day Garia Puja, when villages worship Garia — the god of cattle and good harvest — through song, dance and offerings before a bamboo shrine.
02
History
Garia is tied to the jhum (shifting) cultivation cycle: the seeds are sown after Bishu (Tripuri new year, mid-April) and Garia is invoked to protect the crop and livestock.
The tradition predates the Manikya dynasty's patronage of the arts in Tripura and survives today across Tipra-majority villages.
03
Tribe & Community
The Tripuris (Tiprasa) are the original inhabitants of the kingdom of Tripura, a Tibeto-Burman people speaking Kokborok.
The dance is open to both genders; village elders lead the ritual offerings and younger members carry the music.
