Overview

Longkhum stands at roughly 1,846 m about 17 km from Mokokchung, making it the highest-altitude Ao village in Nagaland. Its ridge position gives long views across the Mokokchung hills and, on clear days, towards the Assam plains.[1],[2]

Historically called Ao-Funemro, the village held a vanguard position in the pre-colonial era and today is known both for its rhododendron forests and, more prosaically, as a major vegetable-growing village.[1],[2]

Longkhum was a frontline village during the head-hunting era, a role recorded in its warrior traditions and in the district's heritage listings.[1],[2]
