Overview

Sangti is a Monpa village and valley about 15 km from Dirang in West Kameng, set along the Sangti river amid paddy, buckwheat and orchard land.[1],[2]

The valley is best known as a historical wintering site for the black-necked crane, a species listed as Near Threatened and treated as sacred in the Buddhist Monpa belt; sightings have become irregular, so a visit should be planned for the landscape and birdlife generally rather than a guaranteed crane.[2],[3]

History

Sangti's households belong to the Monpa communities of the Dirang circle, historically tied to the Dirang dzong and the trade route running north to Tawang.[1],[2]

Life follows the Buddhist calendar of the Kameng belt — Losar, village gompa rites and mani walls — combined with mixed farming, yak products and, more recently, kiwi and apple horticulture.[1],[2]
