Overview

Mebo is a circle town and village belt in East Siang district, about 30 km from Pasighat on the east bank of the Siang, inhabited mainly by Padam Adi.[1],[2]

It makes an easy half-day trip from Pasighat for travellers who want a working Adi village rather than a town, with paddy flats, riverbank forest and a strong weaving tradition.[2],[3]

History

Mebo appears in colonial records of the Abor country as one of the principal Padam settlements of the lower Siang, and was directly involved in the events surrounding the 1911–12 Abor Expedition.[1],[4]

Culture & cultural significance

Village affairs are settled by the kebang council; the Adi keep Donyi-Polo practice alongside Christianity, and the Ponung dance is performed by women in a circle led by a male singer at Solung.[2],[4]

Solung in early September is the year's main festival, with mithun offerings, community feasting and the making of ritual bamboo structures.[4],[5]

Traditional architecture

Long stilted bamboo houses with cane-lashed frames and thatch, set in rows with granaries built apart from the dwellings to protect grain from fire.[2],[4]
