Ningol Chakouba

Ningol Chakouba is the Meitei community's family festival, celebrated on the second day of the bright half of the Meitei month of Hiyangei (October–November). Married daughters (ningol) are invited back to their parental homes for a grand feast prepared by their brothers.

The festival strengthens the bond between the ningol and her natal family, and by extension the tie between two households linked by marriage. In recent decades the Manipur government has organised a state-level Ningol Chakouba in Delhi and other Indian cities to bring the Meitei diaspora together.

Ningol Chakouba is one of the oldest surviving Meitei household observances, predating the arrival of Vaishnavism in Manipur in the 18th century. It shares roots with several other Northeast Indian sibling festivals, such as Bhai Dooj and Bhai Phonta, but has its own distinctive Meitei form.

The festival has been formally promoted by the state government since the 1990s as a marker of Meitei cultural identity, and it is one of the few festivals to have crossed communal lines — Meitei Muslims (Pangal), Meitei Christians and Sanamahi households all observe some form of the ningol invitation.

The Meitei are the majority community of the Imphal Valley. Meitei families historically maintained close ties between married-out daughters and their natal households through regular ritual visits, of which Ningol Chakouba is the most elaborate.

Traditional Meitei attire for the ningol on this day is the innaphi (upper wrap), phanek (wraparound skirt) and gold jewellery; brothers wear the white dhoti and short kurta.

Ningol Chakouba is a rite of family cohesion — the ningol's continued welcome at her natal home symbolises that marriage does not sever the bond, and the gifts from her brothers reaffirm their lifelong responsibility toward her welfare.

Following the December 2024 Ministry of Home Affairs order, foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to enter Manipur. Apply through the FRRO or an Indian mission abroad well in advance.

Indian nationals do not require a permit for Manipur, but should carry a government-issued photo ID.

Late October to mid-November in Imphal is cool and dry, with daytime temperatures of 20–26 °C and cool nights of 10–14 °C. Pack light layers and a warm jacket for evenings.

Imphal has mid-range hotels and heritage guesthouses. Because this is a household festival, hotel demand is moderate — reserve one to two weeks in advance.

Homestays through Manipur Tourism or Meitei associations offer the best chance to attend a family observance.
