About Chapchar Kut
Chapchar Kut is the spring festival of the Mizo community, celebrated every March in Aizawl after the jhum (shifting) fields have been cleared and burnt and the community waits for the rains before sowing.
It is the largest and most-watched festival in the Mizoram calendar and the principal stage for the Cheraw (bamboo dance), perhaps the most iconic image of Mizo culture.

04
Festival history
Chapchar Kut is one of the oldest Mizo festivals, with origins dating back at least to the 1450s in the Lentlang range. After a long lapse in the early 20th century following Christian missionary activity, it was revived in 1962 and has since become Mizoram's flagship public festival.
05
Dates and venue
- Annual dates: typically the first Friday of March (one main day, with associated programming in the days around it).
- Main venue: Assam Rifles Ground, Aizawl.
06
Tribe and community
The Mizo are a community of Tibeto-Burman origin, predominantly Christian, with a strong oral and musical tradition. Mizo women wear the puanchei wraparound skirt with vakiria (a tiara-like headdress) and pawn ropui shawl for festivals; men wear traditional white-and-red puan and headgear.
07
Cultural significance
Chapchar Kut marks the brief, suspenseful pause between burning the jhum fields and sowing them — a moment historically used by the community to gather, sing and celebrate together. Today it is also the main showcase of Mizo dance, music and crafts.
